What are mods in Minecraft?

Minecraft can be played solo or with others. For multiplayer you need a server — see our guide on how to set up a Minecraft server. Besides the standard game (known as the regular launcher on clients and as "Vanilla" on servers) you can also modify it. Those modifications are called mods. They range from small tweaks to entities — extra trading options for villagers, say — to changes in the world itself, such as new biomes or a reworked Nether, and new items, tools or enchantments.

What are modpacks?

When several mods are bundled together into one package, we call it a modpack. In short: a modpack is a collection of mods that changes the game, often dramatically. It can turn Minecraft into a completely different experience. Modpacks work in singleplayer, and most of them ship with a server version so you can run the same pack with friends.

Where can I download modpacks?

Modpacks are easy to find. There are two main mod loaders: Forge and Fabric. Both let you modify Minecraft's standard code and open up an enormous range of possibilities. Most modpacks are available through the CurseForge modpack library, where the All the Mods and RLCraft series are among the best known.

How do I install a modpack?

Installing one on your own PC is simple with the CurseForge app: one click and the pack is on your client. From there you can create a singleplayer world or connect to a server. For multiplayer you install the server version of the same pack after your client is ready.
