What is a DDoS attack and how do you protect your server?

What is a DDoS attack?
DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service: a deliberate attempt to take a server, network or service offline. Unlike an attack from a single source, a DDoS attack uses a network of compromised devices — a botnet — that together flood the target with traffic.
The goal is to exhaust available bandwidth, server resources or network capacity so normal service breaks down. Attacks vary enormously in size and sophistication, and can cause prolonged downtime, degraded performance and lasting reputational damage.
