Minecraft updates in 2026: from 1.20 Trails & Tales to 26.2 Chaos Cubed

Minecraft has used a completely different versioning system since 2026. Where we counted 1.16, 1.19 and 1.20 for years, Mojang switched to year-based numbering: the sequence jumped straight from 1.21.x to 26.1. Here is where the game stands now, what is coming, and how the classic 1.20 update still fits in.

How the new versioning works

Since 2026 there are several so-called game drops per year, each with its own name. The number refers to the year and the drop within it. In 2026 we have had:

  • 26.1 — Tiny Takeover (March 2026)
  • 26.2 — Chaos Cubed (16 June 2026, the current version)
  • 26.3 — scheduled for the third quarter of 2026

For server owners this mainly means updating more often, in smaller steps. Plugins and modpacks typically lag a few weeks behind a new drop.

The current version: 26.2 Chaos Cubed

Chaos Cubed centres on two new block families and a new mob, but the most important change is under the hood.

Sulfur caves and the sulfur cube

The update adds sulfur and cinnabar caves with matching block types. Living in them is the sulfur cube, a new mob suited to the hostile feel of those caves. There are also extra wood variants for stairs and slabs, and new stone textures.

Better performance — including on your server

26.2 optimises chunk loading, improves frame rates on mid-range hardware and reduces stuttering in heavily modded worlds. It also ships an experimental Vulkan renderer. That first point is the one you notice on a busy server: fewer spikes while new terrain is generated.

What 26.3 will bring

The next drop is planned for the third quarter of 2026 and introduces the dappled forest biome, with red shrubs and shelf mushrooms. It also adds wool stairs and slabs, straw beds, cushions and a new structure: the abandoned camp. At the time of writing this version is in snapshot testing.

Looking back: 1.20 Trails & Tales

Still on 1.20, or running a server that deliberately stays there? Here is what that update brought — still relevant, since plenty of modpacks stay on the same version for years.

The Cherry Grove biome

A rare but beautiful biome with tall grasslands, pink flowers and above all the cherry trees with their striking pink leaves. Those trees drop petals, which gives the area a character of its own. The trees grow close together and the grass is a lighter, lime-green shade than ordinary plains.

Camels and the sniffer

1.20 added two friendly mobs. Camels spawn in desert biomes; they are among the largest mobs in the game and seat two players. On rough terrain they are slower than horses.

The sniffer, winner of the 2022 Mob Vote, sniffs out seeds and brings extinct plants back to the overworld. There is a baby version too.

Armor trims

With 16 patterns and 10 colours per piece, 1.20 made it possible to customise your armour completely. You find the armor trim in large structures and combine it at the smithing table. The change is purely cosmetic, but PvP servers use them constantly as team uniforms.
