Hytale: what is new, how it plays and how to play together on a server
In short: Hytale is a voxel sandbox RPG where you explore worlds, fight, build and — increasingly — mod to your heart's content. The game entered Early Access on 13 January 2026 and has been gaining content and improvements step by step since. Here is what is new, how the main systems work, and how to play with friends on your own server.
What is Hytale?
Hytale combines sandbox building — familiar from other voxel games — with RPG and adventure: you head out into a world full of biomes, dungeons and creatures while building your own base, crafting and collecting loot. It is designed to work well both solo and in multiplayer, with a strong focus on creator tools: mods, minigames and custom servers.
What is new
Hytale's development has changed considerably over the past few years. The most significant recent updates:
Early Access, and what that means
Hytale entered Early Access on 13 January 2026. The developers have been clear that this is a starting point rather than a finished product: expect updates, improvements and expanded features throughout the Early Access period.
The Ancient Gateway and Fragments of Orbis
One of the most striking new systems is the Ancient Gateway: a craftable device you place at home to travel to temporary, unstable worlds called Fragments of Orbis. These fragments are built as short adventures, ranging from relaxed exploration to tough combat challenges with loot, including elements reminiscent of extraction gameplay. They also give an early look at what World Gen 2 may become.
Zones have become Regions
Hytale now works with Regions instead of Zones. A Region is a set of three to five biomes with a clear shared theme across gameplay, art and story. Regions are smaller than the old Zones, but there are more of them — so each area has more of its own identity.
Under the hood: an Entity Component System
Technically a lot has changed too. The team moved to an Entity Component System (using Flecs), which mainly matters for performance and flexibility: AI, entities and large numbers of objects in the world all scale better.
How Hytale plays
Worlds and exploration
Exploration is central: you travel through biomes, finding points of interest, ruins and dungeons. Because of the focus on Regions each part of the world feels more deliberately designed, while still rewarding the urge to discover.
In practice you will spend your time:
- farming resources — wood, stone, ore, food
- upgrading gear
- finding new places: dungeons, camps, ruins
- returning to base to craft and store
Combat and loot
Combat is action-oriented and built to work at both casual and demanding difficulty. You collect better weapons and armour and take on a range of mobs and bosses.
Worth knowing if you run a server: combat, AI and world generation happening at once is exactly when RAM and CPU are under the most pressure.
Crafting, building and creativity
Building is the sandbox side: bases, villages, arenas, minigames — whatever you want. Crafting is the glue between exploring and building, turning what you find into upgrades.
Creator tools and modding
Hytale was made with creators in mind: custom content, servers with their own rules, minigames. Not everything is finished during Early Access, but the direction is clear — a lot of freedom for communities.
Multiplayer: why a dedicated server helps
You can of course play together without one, but if you want the same world every time, fixed rules or mods, and no hassle hosting from your own PC, a dedicated server is the easier route.
- the server is always online, which matters for communities
- better performance than hosting on your own machine
- simpler management: restarts, backups, updates
- DDoS protection, especially for public servers

How much RAM do you need?
- 4–5 GB: a small group of friends, vanilla or light modding
- 6–7 GB: a larger group, longer sessions, more world explored
- 10 GB: an active server with plenty of exploration and building
- 15 GB: a large community or intensive use
Player count is not the whole story: heavy combat, mobs and dungeons are far more demanding than quiet building.
Starting a Hytale server without stress
- Pick a plan that matches your group and play style
- Create your world, or import existing settings
- Test with two or three friends, watching for lag during combat and world generation
- Scale up when RAM or CPU start running tight
- Keep up with updates during Early Access — patches change performance
In summary
Hytale is shaping up as a large sandbox RPG where exploration, combat, building and creator tools come together. Early Access brought new systems like the Ancient Gateway and Fragments of Orbis, and world design became tighter with Regions replacing Zones. Want to play with friends without the hassle? Your own server is the simplest way.
